Government Strengthens Road Financing Framework Amid Shift to Electric Mobility

The Government is advancing measures to safeguard the sustainable financing of road maintenance as Kenya transitions towards electric mobility.

Principal Secretary, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, today received a briefing on the Study on the Impact of Vehicle Electrification on the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) and Alternative Financing Options, being undertaken in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI).

The study is examining the potential impact of vehicle electrification on the RMLF and assessing alternative, sustainable financing mechanisms to ensure the continued maintenance and development of Kenya’s road network.

The briefing reviewed progress on the Baseline Assessment Report and Scenario Forecasting Report, which provide insights into emerging trends and their implications for road maintenance financing.

The engagement precedes a broader stakeholder consultation later this month, which will bring together key actors to review the findings and contribute to the development of a resilient, sustainable and future-ready road financing framework.

The initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to ensuring that Kenya’s infrastructure financing systems keep pace with transformation in the transport sector while sustaining reliable road connectivity across the country.
