President Ruto Launches Key Road Projects to Boost Connectivity and Economic Growth in Western Kenya

H.E. William Samoei Ruto yesterday presided over the launch of the upgrading to bitumen standard of the 11-kilometre Chavakali–Lusiola–Shikimu–Malinya Road in Sabatia Constituency, Vihiga County.
The project marks a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity, with expectations that it will ease the movement of agricultural produce, improve access to essential social amenities, and strengthen links between Vihiga County, Kakamega County, and neighbouring regions. For residents and traders alike, the road promises faster transport, reduced costs, and expanded economic opportunities.
Earlier in the day, the President launched a series of major road projects under the Kenya Rural Roads Authority in Budalangi and Matayos constituencies in Busia County, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure.
In Budalangi, the Head of State flagged off the upgrading to bitumen standards of the 13-kilometre Nangina–Sio Port–Okados–Mundere Road (C828), a critical corridor traversing Funyula and Budalangi constituencies. He later proceeded to Matayos Constituency, where he launched the upgrading and Performance-Based Routine Maintenance of the Matayos–Namwitsula Bridge–Nasewa CAIP–Shibale Road.
These strategic investments are expected to unlock the economic potential of the region by supporting fish farming activities, facilitating efficient transportation of agricultural produce, and improving access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. The improved infrastructure is set to stimulate trade, create jobs, and enhance the overall quality of life for local communities.
The events were attended by Principal Secretary for Roads, Joseph Mbugua, Director General of Kenya Rural Roads Authority, Jackson Magondu, alongside local leaders and residents, who welcomed the projects as transformative milestones for the region.
The launches signal a broader national push to deliver a seamless, well-connected road network that supports inclusive growth and drives Kenya’s socio-economic transformation.
