Kenya Champions Smart Engineering for Sustainable Growth at University of Nairobi
University of Nairobi: Principal Secretary Eng. Joseph Mbugua on Wednesday presided over the 7th World Engineering Day celebrations at the University of Nairobi, urging Kenyan engineers to champion innovation and digitalisation as the backbone of the country’s next phase of growth.
Under the theme “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalisation,” he emphasized that engineering is central to Kenya’s ambition of becoming a regional trade and services hub.
Eng. Mbugua highlighted key projects, including fibre optic infrastructure along major highways, 630 km from Eldoret to Nadapal, with over 1,000 km more planned along the Isiolo–Mandera corridor which will boost national and regional connectivity, underpin digital services, e-commerce, and smart infrastructure.
The PS also noted the rollout of Intelligent Traffic Systems in Nairobi to automate traffic management, demonstrating how technology can enhance urban living, reduce travel time, and promote environmental sustainability.
He urged engineers to position themselves at the forefront of Africa’s emerging AI-driven industrial revolution, emphasizing that Kenya’s transformation will be guided by those who innovate responsibly and sustainably.
The event was attended by leading figures in Kenya’s engineering sector, including Eng. Shammah Kiteme (President, Institution of Engineers of Kenya), Eng. Margaret Ogai (CEO, Engineers Board of Kenya), and Eng. Jane Mutulili (CEO, Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya).
