Siaya Set for Major Road Transformation as Government Unveils KSh32 Billion Investment

The Government has committed KSh32 billion towards the construction of 400 kilometres of new roads in Siaya County, opening a new chapter in the County’s connectivity and economic transformation.

H.E. President William Ruto, during his development tour of Siaya County on Wednesday, 15th September 2026, announced that the investment forms part of a wider programme to improve access between communities, markets and key economic centres, while linking Siaya more effectively to the wider Lake Victoria region.

The President further announced that construction of the long-awaited 500-kilometre Lake Victoria Ring Road will commence in November 2026. The strategic corridor will run from Busia to Muhuru Bay in Migori County, passing through Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay counties. The project is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and facilitate the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods around the Lake Victoria Basin.

For a County whose economy is closely linked to agriculture, fishing, trade and small-scale enterprise, better roads mean more than shorter journeys. They mean easier access to markets, reduced transport challenges for farmers and traders, and improved links to beaches, landing sites and other centres of economic activity.

During the #SiayaFocus tour, the President also inspected the Dhogoye Bridge and ongoing road works in Bondo, underscoring the Government’s focus on improving connectivity along the Lake Victoria shoreline. The Dhogoye Bridge and its approach roads form part of the Kisian–Usenge–Osieko corridor, with the project expected to enhance access and unlock opportunities in fishing, tourism, agriculture and trade.

The Government is also set to upgrade the Bondo–Usenge–Osieko Road to bitumen standard, further strengthening the connection between Bondo and communities along the lakeshore.

In Rarieda Constituency, President Ruto launched construction of the 31.8-kilometre Kalandini–Ka Elija Road, a KSh1.9 billion investment aimed at improving mobility and opening up new opportunities for agriculture, fishing and trade.

Further south, the President launched construction of the 20-kilometre Sihay–Bar–Ober–Sega Road in Ugenya Sub-County, adding another important link to the County’s growing road network.

He also launched construction of 74.8 kilometres of roads comprising the Kodiaga–Rabango–Awelo–Ogam–Nyamonye, Ogam–Usenge, Dudi–Mutumbu–Kodiaga and Bondo TTI access roads. At a cost of KSh4.6 billion, the project will improve connectivity across Bondo, Alego Usonga and Gem constituencies, while opening up access to Usenge Beach and Lake Kanyaboli.

These investments are significant for the County’s productive sectors. Better roads will make it easier for farmers to move produce from farms to markets, improve access to fishing communities and landing sites, and strengthen links between rural communities and urban centres.

The road projects also complements broader Government investments aimed at unlocking Siaya’s blue and agricultural economies. The Government has previously announced investments in Usenge Pier and port facilities and a fish market, recognising the potential of Lake Victoria to support livelihoods, trade and jobs.

With the Lake Victoria Ring Road expected to provide a major regional connectivity and hundreds of kilometres of roads being developed within the County, Siaya is set to play an increasingly important role in a more connected Lake Victoria economy.
